Tenacious Spirit victory

WESTERN Spirit overcame a lack of numbers and early goal to beat Mitchelton 3-2 in their latest City 3 match.

Spirit travelled to Mitchelton short on numbers with school holidays and late withdrawals leaving just 10 players to run out.

The situation became tougher after Mitchelton scored in the second minute.

However, an equaliser by Grace Menjivar ignited Spirit's fightback.

Menjivar and Tenille McGraw again combined to put Spirit up 2-1 going into halftime.

Spirit's third goal was scored by Amy Sharland, after another assist by McGraw.

"It wasn't easy at times but these players believe in each other and don't want to let their teammates down so they fought for everything today,'' coach Mark Scholes said.

"The addition of Tenille and Simone from division 5 was great and showed that Spirit has some talent throughout the club. Along with new signings Amy Sharland and Melanie Ford this was an inspirational performance.''

Goalkeeper Eve Lanoux worked tirelessly along with defenders Laura Johnston, Whitney Silva, Stefanie Ashcroft and Riva Lauren Jones.

Spirit have a round 3 City Cup game against Ipswich City to play.

Spirit's next premiership match is a catch-up game against Virginia, away on Sunday.
