Teens in 18-hole tussle for Christmas Open

IT TOOK three attempts on the final hole to separate this year's top contenders at the annual Sandy Gallop Junior Christmas Open.

Enduring the weekend's hot weather, 36 juniors took to the Sandy Gallop course for the annual Pee Wee, 9-hole and 18-hole competition.

Johan Pierre, Ned Hartz and Joshua Harswill all finished on 73 at the end of the 18-hole boys competition.

They were sent back out for the first play-off finish in the tournaments eight-year history.

Johan led the way with a brilliant bunker shot before Joshua hit back to tie the decider. Both players were sent out for a third time on the 18th with Joshua sinking a birdie to win the championship for the third year in a row.

With Ipswich golfers Michael Pattemore and Lauren Ziebarth taking out the Nett runners-up awards, Sandy Gallop junior coordinator Sonia Condon said this year's event was a great success dispite the warm weather.

"It was a very warm and muggy morning and both the players and their caddies endured the conditions to give us a wonderful and exciting 2016 event,” she said. "The Pee Wees tackled the course with some wonderful scoring and finished to enjoy the sausage sizzle and some candy from Santa.

"When the nine-hole competitors finished we knew we were in for a great day of scoring.”

In her first year at the tournament, Brigette Griffin from Maroochy River won the Junior Girls Championship, with Ned Hartz (66) and Kirsten Syme (62) crowned the Nett winners.
