Teen to tour UK with Aussie squad
FERNVALE'S Danica Bambrick is off to the UK in April as part of the Australian Futsal Association under-14 tour.
The 13-year-old earned her spot on the tour playing for Queensland at the national schools titles in Penrith, NSW last year.
There, Queensland won the title and St Peter Claver College student Danica impressed.
"It was a surprise," Danica said of her national team selection.
"It's going to be good."
The Australian team will play a selection of UK school teams on its tour, which will be a huge eye-opener for Danica, who has never been overseas before.
Danica also plays football for the Western Pride and hopes to crack the under-15 squad this season.
However, futsal is her greater love.
She would rather wear an Australian senior futsal shirt one day than play for the Brisbane Roar in the W-League.
"It's a smaller court so it's faster," she said of her preference for the indoor game.
While she is a striker in football, in futsal she plays as a defender.
Danica first began kicking a football around when she was about five, for Brisbane Valley.
"I just liked it, I guess," she said.
"Some of my friends played it so I joined."
At St Peter Claver College she found the perfect place to make the most of her passion for futsal.
"I think it's one of the best schools in Queensland for futsal and soccer," she said.
Beyond her tour of the UK Danica hopes to again make the Queensland school representative team so she can earn herself another trip to Sydney for the nationals this year.
