From Timor to Student of the Year

STEVEN Jeffries is the toast of St Edmund's College after winning this year's Construction Skills Queensland Student of the Year award.

The 16-year-old Yamanto student was thrilled about the award, which recognises outstanding apprentices and students in school-based programs.

Steven volunteered to help build a school in East Timor, an experience which impressed the award judges and shaped his character.

"It was the best experience of my life," he said.

"We built a school helping kids out in Third World countries where there were kids walking six kilometres back and forth to school - we built one within a one-kilometre distance. It was an amazing feeling."

Steven is currently a trainee timber floor sander and installer.
