Tablets killing television as tech-savvy dads jump online

FORGET channel surfing, for Queensland dads the remote has been replaced with a tablet or a smartphone, as the technology age unfolds.

Gladstone father-of-two Justin Fisher said his young family had embraced the technological revolution and his business relied heavily on the use of tablets and smartphones to function efficiently.

"I run a construction safety company up here and my business couldn't survive without the technology," Justin said.

Justin also supported recent Telstra research, which found 87% of Queensland dads used a connected device, as opposed to the traditional channel surfing on the tube.

"Absolutely, I watch minimal TV now, I've got sporting apps on the phone that alert me on live games, I've got the Billabong and Rip Curl apps to let me know about the surfing and YouTube for things from DIY to anything really," Justin said.

Telstra research also found 50% of Queensland dads used devices to distract their children.

But for Justin it was not a matter of distraction, but of education, when it came to his children using technology.

"My three-year-old and seven-year-old both play around on the tablets and I guess for us it's about making sure they're not sheltered from it so it becomes a seamless integration for their future," he said.

However Justin said he made sure his kids spent a lot of time with music and exercising outdoors, as there was time for technology after dark.
