Taipans openers wind up fun dial

FUN is the name of the game for the Eastern Taipans Black team in the Ipswich Division 3 competition.

Their fun came at Mt Crosby's expense last weekend, however, when Taipans openers Ricky Palmer (201) and Will Tronc (123) chalked up 332 unbeaten for their team.

That was in response to bowling Mt Crosby out for 36.

"They only had seven to start the game," Taipans skipper Michael Groth said sympathetically.

"They had a couple of under-14s starting for them. Then they were joined by some under-12s after an hour-and-a-half."

The youngsters got a lesson in making the most of opportunities, as the Taipans claimed outright points in a day.

"They batted intelligently," Groth said of his openers, who brought back memories of Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor putting on 329 opening in the fifth Ashes test of 1989.

"They weren't just teeing off.

"We had our other fourth grade team batting on Ivor Marsden 3 and most of them came over to watch."

In the second innings, Mt Crosby was bundled out for 76, with Lawrence Stanley taking eight wickets for the match (3-19 and 5-32).

The mountain men were not without their stars.

Kel Janke scored 27 in his team's first innings and 61 in its second - more than 80 per cent of the team's runs for the game.

However, he was not the only one to stand up to the one-sided challenge.

"Their young kids bowled really well," Groth said.

It was the Taipans Black team's first game in the division, having been promoted for winning all its Division 4 matches this season.

"We got booted out of fourth grade because they said we were too good," Groth said.

He doesn't think that is likely in Division 3, despite the ease of Saturday's win.

"There's probably three teams ahead of us. Centrals beat us in the grand final last year, so we know they can play and Northsiders are undefeated."

There is also the rivalry with the other Taipans team, Orange, with the two pitted against each other at Bruce Raleigh Oval next round.

"Not much has been said," Groth said. "They're higher than us and a few blokes have played second grade, so they'll be more confident than us."
