Syringe armed robber arrested

A WOMAN wanted over a string of alleged robberies while armed with a syringe was arrested as she hid at her father's Ipswich home yesterday.

Maree Sharelle Leighton, 41, has been charged with nine offences including armed robbery in company, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm or transmit serious disease and stealing.

Police will allege Leighton's offending occurred across the south-east last week including Waterford West, Post Office Square and at Roma Street, Brisbane.

Police allege Leighton armed herself with a syringe and robbed her victims at ATMs and inflicted a needle stick injury on a victim at Roma St. During all of the alleged offences handbags, purses, cash, credit cards and personal identification were stolen.

Police are continuing to investigate the robbery of a woman inside a toilet complex at a Redbank cinema on Saturday night by a woman claiming to have a syringe.

Leighton's case was mentioned at Ipswich Magistrates Court today where police requested an adjournment until today. Leighton, from Edens Landing, did not apply for bail.

She will next appear in court tomorrow.
