A PROPOSAL to name the upcoming Toowoomba Second Range Crossing after Senior Constable Brett Forte has received overwhelming online support from Queenslanders.

More than 11,000 people have signed a petition asking to name the multi-billion dollar project after Snr Const Forte, who was killed in the line of duty in May.

The petition, which doesn't close until the end of the month, was submitted to the Queensland Parliament by a Brisbane radio station.

The idea to name the crossing Brett Forte Way was started publicly by Acting Ipswich Mayor Paul Tully, who took to Twitter with the idea just a day after the police officer's funeral on June 7.

A petition was started the next day.

Toowoomba residents were divided over the proposal on Facebook, but more than 85% of respondents to The Chronicle's poll on the matter supported it.

To sign the petition, head to the Queensland Government website.
