Supermarket boost for Boonah region

SHOPPING in Boonah is about to get a whole lot bigger.

Ritchies Supa IGA and Metcash, owner of the IGA brand, are moving forward with the redevelopment of the local Boonah supermarket.

Council approved the major redevelopment of the existing supermarket in High St in mid-2012, providing a five-year approval window for the completion of the project.

"This significant investment by a major retailer is a big vote of confidence in the region and the Boonah community, it represents a reshaping of the High St shopping experience," Cr Brent said.

"We all acknowledge the difficult economic conditions at present and the impact these are having on businesses, both big and small, across all sectors of the economy.

"These issues are shared by every rural and regional community throughout Australia."

Cr Brent said the expansion would increase youth employment in the Boonah region and boost the local economy.

"I thank Ritchies and Metcash for what is a significant financial commitment to our local community," he said.

Ritchies Queensland and Northern NSW Manager Peter Lee said the company has enjoyed positive interactions with Boonah and the surrounding community.

"It has been great to work with a council with such a positive attitude towards business and promoting growth," Mr Lee said.

"Our company has been made to feel most welcome in Boonah."

The expansion is expected to be completed by late next year.
