Suns eyeing off Hawks as compensation for O'Meara
AFL: Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft said the Suns were looking at between six to eight Hawthorn players as they looked for compensation for star midfielder Jaeger O'Meara.
O'Meara has nominated the Hawks as his preferred new home and Ashcroft said the Suns were looking at proven and established players in exchange.
Luke Breust and James Sicily have been mentioned but Breust moved to deny those rumours, denying he had been put up for trade bait.
"We're not going to go into the individual names of those players, but there would be anywhere between six to eight players discussed,” Ashcroft said.
"That, coupled with draft selections, it's all part of the mix.”
Former Brisbane Lions star Ashcroft said the ball was now in Hawthorn's court regarding O'Meara.
"We're letting them come to us with what they think they can give and we'll make an assessment on that over the next few days,” he said.
"Hopefully, sooner rather than later, we can confirm deals.”
Ashcroft said out-of-contract Collingwood ruckman Jarrod Witts was also on the Suns' radar.
"He's someone we'd like to talk to and bring into our footy club,” he said.
"Rocket's (Suns coach Rodney Eade) worked with him in the past at Collingwood and we'll have more discussions and get that finalised pretty quickly.”
Ashcroft said Fremantle midfielder Michael Barlow, who is also out of contract, was not in the club's trade plans.
"Probably not,” he said when asked if the Suns were interested in Barlow.
"I know we've spoken about the job description and players filling a role within our midfield, with midfield depth.
"Michael fits that job description but again we haven't confirmed nor denied any of those names yet.”
