Success is sweet for Sarah-Jane
SELF taught cake designer Sarah-Jane Webb from Redbank took the cake this year winning the 2014 Queensland Cake Designer of the Year award.
Her business, Studio Cakes proved it had the winning ingredient at the inaugural Queensland Weddings and Events of Australia (WEOA) Awards for Excellence in July.
Commencing work in the cake making and decorating business three years ago, Mrs Webb said she was humbled to receive the award.
"It is such incredible acknowledgement for the work we do day in and day out," she said.
"There's some incredibly talented people working in the cake industry so I feel fortunate being recognised for my cake designs."
The designer said she had inherited her love for cooking growing up tasting her mother's freshly baked creations and being inspired by her father's love for art.
"Studio Cakes is ultimately driven by a passion for contemporary design and sharing in beautiful experiences with our clients on their special day, that's what we're all about." she said.
"I do a lot of cakes in the Ipswich area, I find I do a lot of milestone birthday cakes and novelty cakes, they're challenging but really rewarding."
As well as taking out the prestigious award, Studio Cakes also created the centrepiece cake for the prestigious event, a seven-tiered cake standing over one metre tall.
"The design incorporated all the elements of the modern wedding cake, including silver leaf, watercolour detail and statement sugar flowers. It was such an honour showcasing our work in this centrepiece it reminded me how much we've grown as a business," she said.
Mrs Webb has designed cakes for every occasion including birthdays, engagement parties, baby showers, graduations and even her own wedding.
"Most people told me I was crazy and they were probably right but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity of designing a cake for our own special day," she said.
"Designing cakes is a lot about art and I truly believe that if you can dream it, we can create it, the only limitation is the imagination.
"But as well as looking good, it's got to taste sensational too."
