WORLD No.9 Sam Stosur holds the key to Australia's chances of upsetting titleholders the Czech Republic in this weekend's Federation Cup World Group opener for 2013 in the Czech city of Ostrava.

Stosur had a horror start to the year, suffering first round losses in Brisbane and Sydney before going out in the second round at the Australian Open.

But the Queenslander has a 29-9 record in the Fed Cup and victories in her two singles matches would give Australia a great chance of success.

Czech captain Petr Pala has assembled a strong squad to kick off the country's defence of the title, headed by world No.8 Petra Kvitova.

The 2011 Wimbledon champion will be backed up by Lucie Safarova, Lucie Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova.

Australia's second singles berth will come down to a battle between Casey Dellacqua and Jarmila Gajdosova, with captain Alicia Molik faces with a tough call deciding on the doubles combination.

Gajdosova won the Australian Open mixed doubles title with Matthew Ebden, while Dellacqua and 16-year-old Ash Barty made the women's final in Melbourne.
