Stop the deaths, fill in the mines: Ipswich councillor

IPSWICH Councillor Paul Tully says the latest tragedy at Aqua Lakes should be the catalyst for action to stop further incidents.

A 21-year-old man is missing and feared drowned after disappearing below the water line at an area known as Aqua Lakes - a series of disused mines filled with water near Collingwood Park.

A search is underway at the lake this morning.

Cr Tully says the lakes are a magnet for young people in summer.

"Aqua Lake was the scene of a similar drowning tragedy earlier this year and these accidents will continue while the lakes remain easily accessible to the public," he said.

"Aqua Lake and Blue Lake need to be filled with solid waste from construction sites around southeast Queensland.

"Developers are frequently looking for disposal sites and these two former open cut mines would be ideal locations which could be made available free of charge to the development industry."

Cr Tully says the latest tragedy should be a "turning point to make these sites safe again".

He says he will present a plan to the government to work with the Ipswich council to end future tragedies at Collingwood Park.
