States could give hope to Lyme disease sufferer

FORMER Downlands student and Lyme disease sufferer Beki Seekamp has travelled to America to receive help she cannot get in Australia.

The disease and other Lyme-like illnesses are not formally recognised here.

Ms Seekamp has a consultation with a Lyme disease specialist in New York.

Her sister Elisha Parker was grateful to the Toowoomba community as their efforts helped fund the important overseas trip.

"The world-leading Lyme disease specialist that Beki is consulting in the US will thoroughly analyse Beki's testing and treatment to date and will formulate a treatment plan that Beki's doctors in Australia will administer with guidance and input," she said.

This week Ms Seekamp's family Tasha and Amy Seekamp drew a raffle at Wippells Autos with tickets bought from their recent Lyme disease awareness stall at Grand Central.

Ms Seekamp said in a Facebook post she felt like she had won the lottery to have a consultation with the specialist.

"I get to see the world-leading specialist and get a new plan of attack on how to stop this disease and get out of this nightmare I've been stuck in," she said.
