State records big growth

QUEENSLAND is leading the way with Western Australia in the fastest growing population records, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics last week.

Australia's population increased by almost two per cent for the year ending December 2008.

The last time Australia saw higher growth rates (above two per cent) was in the 1950's and 1960's as a result of post war migration and high birth rates.

These rates compared with only a one per cent growth rate recorded five years ago.

As at December 31, 2008, Australia's population had grown to 21,644,000, an increase of 406,100 people during the previous year.
