THE roles mums play in the school community has not been underestimated at an Ipswich high school.

St Edmund's College will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the mothers' club on July 19.

Gloria Fish joined the mothers' group in 1979 when the elder of her two sons started at St Edmund's College.

She is still part of the mothers' club today.

Mrs Fish said the group had raised a lot of money over the years.

"We got to know the mothers that came in from other churches. We became friends and stayed friends all our lives," she said.

"As you come into grade eight you become part of the college, and the mothers' club met once a month on a Wednesday."

Mrs Fish said the club would cook meals for families during times of need. The school holds a dinner each year and last year 150 people attended.

A mass will be held at St Mary's Church before shuttle buses take the people to Brothers Leagues Club for a two-course meal.
