Splashing out in Lowood
LOWOOD Pool will receive a major upgrade thanks to a $219,000 grant from the Federal Government.
Blair MP Shayne Neumann and Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann made the announcement in Lowood yesterday.
Mr Lehmann said funds were being provided because Somerset Regional Council had identified the Lowood Pool development as a priority project for funding under round five of the Regional Development Australia Fund. Somerset Regional Council has also provided $24,200 towards the project.
Mr Neumann said the local community deserved a spruced up pool.
"Lowood is a wonderful country community and this pool needs new landscaping, seating and ramps because it is looking fairly tired and run down," Mr Neumann said.
"So I commend the council for partnering with the Federal Labor Government. I think they have chosen wisely with the use of money for this purpose.
"We want kids to be active and live healthy lifestyles so this pool is critical for the people who live in Lowood. There is a primary school and high school down the road and kids love to swim.
"We've got a situation where ten million Australians are overweight...so getting kids active and swimming in pools is crucial."
Mr Lehmann said it was "very important" to have the pool upgraded further.
"The pool is open all summer and we have increased the opening period by heating the pool, and we've upgraded toilets and put a shade structure in," he said.
"The area is growing and the pool gets heavily used, so it is really good to get this money for the upgrade project."
