Spinner Doherty could be X factor in second one-dayer

TASMANIAN spinner Xavier Doherty looks set to be rushed into Australia's team for tonight's second one-day international against Pakistan in Dubai.

Nathan Lyon has been preferred to Doherty by national selectors in recent months, but with the same turning pitch that was used in Sunday's T20 match between the teams to be used again, the Aussies are likely to go with two spinners.

Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin said he had been "a little bit shocked" by how much turn the Dubai International Stadium wicket offered in the six-wicket T20 victory, and said he expected Doherty to come under serious consideration.

"You'd have to have a very close look at him, especially with the way the wicket played in the Twenty20 game," Haddin said.

"You know what you're going to get with X and the way he bowls … stump to stump and into the wicket. I think he'll get a bit of purchase."

Doherty was called in to the squad to replace all-rounder Mitch Marsh, who has been sidelined with a hamstring complaint.

Australia won the first ODI against Pakistan on Tuesday, and needs to sweep the three-game series, and also rely on the West Indies winning at least two of its five games in the present series in India, to regain the world No.1 ranking.

The Windies got off to a great start in game one yesterday, beating India by 124 runs in Kochi thanks to a brilliant unbeaten 126 not out by Marlon Samuels.

Batting first, the Windies reached 6-321 before the home side was bowled out for 197 in just 41 overs.
