Speedsters crowned after a super season
A NUMBER of regional racers tasted glory with race day and track titles at Willowbank Raceway's 2013 Track Championship Season Finale at the weekend.
Eleven track champions were crowned on Saturday night, including Brassall-based Paul Doeblien (Super Sedan), Redbank Plains racers Blaze Hansen (Super Street) and Chris Hall (SuperComp) and Raceview's Tammy Goldthorpe (Modified Bike).
They were joined by Slacks Creek's Wade Moran (Modified) and Anthony Weiland (Street Bike), Jimboomba's Dylan Leo (Junior Dragster), Sheldon's Bill Fletcher (Supercharged Outlaws), Kallangur's Simon Isherwood (Super Gas), Suerfers Paradise's Jody Wentworth (Powder Puff) and Cornubia's Josh Fletcher (Street Sedan).
Laidley-based Kevin Morton (Modified), Dinmore's Darren Doeblien (Super Sedan), Anstead's Chris Collin (Modified Bike), Hansen (Super Street) and Leo (Junior Dragster) enjoyed race-day victories.
Following the weekend's events, Hansen has three track champion titles from five seasons across three different race brackets. His other titles were in the 2009 Junior Dragster and 2012 Modified Willowbank Raceway Modified.
"What a perfect end to the season I had, taking the event win and claiming back-to-back track championships in separate classes and a third consecutive track championship for the car itself," Hansen said.
The Ipswich racer this year took the wheel of Rob Harrington's VN Commodore previously driven to track championship glory by Harrington in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
"This season has certainly been a standout for me," Hansen said.
"Not only did I clinch my third title in five seasons but I also ran my first eight and seven second passes in my dragster and enjoyed some great trips around the country helping out my teammates Rob Harrington and Kelly Corbett with their cars.
"Next year my attentions will turn back to my modified dragster.
"We will be looking to find our limits before backing it off a bit and trying to get competitive ready to take on the best in the modified ranks once again."
Hansen is also in the design process for a Top Fuel motorbike which he hopes to get on track in the next year to 18 months.
Joining Hansen in adding to their previous track championship honours were Jody Wentworth (2012, 2013), Josh Fletcher (2002, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2013), Bill Fletcher (2008, 2010, 2013), Paul Doeblien (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013) Tammy Goldthorpe (2004, 2005, 2013) and Simon Isherwood (2009, 2012, 2013).
Willowbank Raceway chief executive officer Tony Manson presented trophies to the 2013 track championship winners.
"They have fought hard all season and showed passion, determination, skill and speed," Manson said.
