LATEST: The sunken excavator has been pulled from the muddy bottom of Gatakers Bay.

The Chronicle can also reveal the machine was new and was worth about a quarter-of-a-million dollars.

Clayton's Towing Service operations manager Mike Clayton said everything went to plan.

"This one was a bit different because we only had an hour to work in," he said.

AFTERNOON UPDATE: The attempt to pull a bogged excavator from the beach at Gatakers Bay is under way.

A second excavator has started digging around the sunken machine and the crew is starting to prepare the tow cable.

The area is taped off and a crowd of about 50 onlookers has gathered to watch the recovery attempt.

MID-MORNING: The Clayton's Towing Service crew has arrived on site in Hervey Bay and is setting up to pull out the stricken excavator after lunch.

Clayton's operations manager Mike Clayton said the excavator was "dead now it won't go again - it was totally under last night".

"We've got a heavy recovery equipment, we have a mega-tow on site and see if we can drag it out," he said.

"If we can't pull it, we'll use the airbags to lift it," he said.

EARLIER: A specialist four-man crew is on the way to Hervey Bay to pull a sunken excavator out of the sand at Gatakers Bay.

Clayton's Towing Service towing manager Garrad Zammit said a heavy mega-tow recovery unit, a small and large excavator and specialist recovery equipment had been sent from Gympie and Nambour.

He said he was confident the team would be able to pull the excavator out.

"We've done this type of thing before," Mr Zammit said.

He said because of the tides they had a window of opportunity to perform the recovery.

Low tide is at 2.43pm on Wednesday.

The excavator became bogged near Gatakers boat ramp on Tuesday and could not be rescued before the tide came in.
