Smiles make it worth the while for amusements king

SMILES on faces are what make it all worthwhile for Glen McGregor, the man in charge of all things amusement at this year's harbour festival.

The sixth-generation showman, who's been in the carnival industry for 53 years, wouldn't do another job for all the money in the world.

The joy of bringing happiness to kids and families alike is too good to pass up.

Mr McGregor is co-ordinating the amusements at the harbour festival, including all the rides and sideshow alley shenanigans.

Despite the technological age, he believes there's still something nostalgic about regional carnivals and festivals that keeps bringing punters back.

"Oh yeah, definitely, there'll always be those that look forward to, whether it be the regional show or a festival like this, which is a regular event every year, everybody looks forward to it," he said.

"Everything is well patronised here. The community really gets behind the festival and it's one that we all look forward to coming to."

Mr McGregor knows just about all there is to know about the harbour festival, having attended every one ever held, and he said himself, his partner and his son - who he hoped would carry on the family business - wouldn't change life on the road for anything.

"It's certainly a good life. We have lots of friends in different towns," he said.

With about 150 staff working to deliver a great experience to Gladstone locals, as well as the logistical side of the operation, Mr McGregor has his hands full, but said the harbour festival was always a worthwhile event for him and his crew.
