Slater crowned champion for 11th time

AMERICAN Kelly Slater has claimed a record 11th world surfing title by advancing out of round three at the tour's penultimate event in San Francisco.

The 39-year-old only needed to get through his round three heat to wrap up the 2011 crown at Ocean Beach.

He did so with a scrappy victory over Australian Dan Ross, and admitted to feelings of relief more than celebration.

"I don't know, this hasn't sunk in. I've been pretty stressed about it and I'm glad it's over," Slater said.
