THE Queensland Show Society has confirmed it will not be changing the rules for the Miss Show Girl competition in light of the recent Bundaberg debacle over the winner not being able to fulfil her duties.

Maryann Douglas was crowned Bundaberg's Miss Showgirl 2013 in May but, due to an already planned overseas trip, Miss Douglas told the show society that she could not compete in the sub-chamber finals.

The crowning title was then bestowed on runner-up Brittany Walker, and the show society asked that Ms Douglas return all of the prizes she had been given.

When the NewsMail spoke with Ms Douglas at that time, she indicated that she did not intend to give back the prizes.

Queensland Show Society CEO Mark Bryant said the issue had been raised at a board meeting on August 12, which was attended by 15 show society delegates from across the state.

"It was raised there and it was decided there was nothing wrong with our rules," he said.

He said the local show society "got it wrong".

"What happened was a local issue," he said.

"We did review the rules and no, there's nothing to be changed."

Mr Bryant said the rules clearly stated that should the Miss Show Girl be unable to fulfil her duties, the title was handed over to the runner-up.

"They made a big deal of it at a show society level," he said.

"It wasn't handled as well as it should have been from show society personalities."

The NewsMail contacted the Bundaberg Show Society for comment but its calls were not returned yesterday.
