Shoplifter fined after spree

A MAN who went on a stealing spree at Riverlink Shopping Centre has faced a hefty “bill” of $500.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard Russell Thomas Hanson, 43, stole pyjamas worth $28 from Best & Less, clothing worth $19 from Crazy Clarks, clothing and cosmetics worth $16 from Kmart and a towel worth $20 from Copperart on November 22.

Police were called after Hanson stole the pyjamas from Best & Less and he was quickly found in the Ipswich Mall.

Hanson was searched and officers discovered the rest of the stolen property which was returned undamaged.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Adam McDonald said Hanson, who receives Centrelink payments, seemed to have gone “on a bit of a shopping spree”.

Hanson pleaded guilty to four charges of unlawfully taking away goods – an offence of shoplifting.

He was fined $500.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin told Hanson he should have been charged with stealing rather than the less- serious offence of shoplifting.

“You’ve got a shocking criminal history; it’s eight pages long,” Mr McLaughlin said.

“It’s littered with both drug offences and offences of dishonesty.
