Hot retort by caught shoplifter

A SHOPLIFTER threw a cup of hot coffee at an employee who caught her in the act of stealing.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard Rachael Lee Johnston went to the 7-Eleven on Blackstone Road at Silkstone and filled her pockets with stolen items.

Johnston, 23, then made two cups of hot coffee from a dispensing machine and went to the front counter for the drinks.

Prosecutor Constable David Thiel said the employee asked Johnston about the stolen property in her pockets but she denied taking anything.

The employee then reached over the counter and removed the goods from her pocket.

Const Thiel said Johnston accidentally spilled some of the coffee from one of the cups, then lifted the lid off the other cup and threw it at the employee.

Johnston pleaded guilty to stealing, committing a public nuisance and failing to appear in court. She was fined $400 and ordered to pay $15 restitution.

Convictions were recorded.

Defence lawyer Kevin Rose said his client was remorseful about the incident and had been stressed due to financial pressures.
