Shark nets go ahead of Queensland's wild weather

ABOUT 25 shark nets are being removed from beaches on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast ahead of Queensland's wild weather.

Fisheries Queensland shark control program manager Jeff Krause told Fairfax the nets had been removed as a precaution in case they came loose and caused a hazard.

"Gear that is loose in the water can be a danger to swimmers especially if someone becomes entangled," he said.

"While every effort is made to anchor the gear, high seas caused by strong winds can cause some gear to become adrift.

"In total, ten nets have been removed with a further fifteen nets to be removed tomorrow, weather permitting.

The weather bureau has warned of heavy rain and damaging winds between Rockhampton and Brisbane, extending down to the state's southern border during Friday.

The heavy rain may lead to flash flooding, with some 24 hour totals in excess of 300mm.

The damaging gusts may reach around 90kmh, mostly near the coast and ranges.

Water levels on the high tide are likely to exceed the highest tide of the year between Rockhampton and the Gold Coast from Thursday.

Dangerous surf conditions and significant beach erosion are also expected between Rockhampton and the Gold Coast from today.

Surf Life Saving Australia recommends people stay out of the water and well away from surf-exposed areas.
