Sexually abusive dad bribes stepdaughter with Minecraft

A GOLD Coast girl was terrorised by her sexually abusive stepfather for three years with threats to leave her homeless if she told anyone about it.

The man, who can't be named to protect the girl, also bribed his stepdaughter into sexual acts by offering to buy items in online game Minecraft.

She was aged between 10 and 13 when her stepfather, aged 43 to 47, abused her daily in their Gold Coast home between 2010 and 2013. The acts would happen while the girl's mother was in the shower or toilet.

The man was found guilty in the Southport District Court in Friday after a four-day trial to eight charges including maintaining a relationship with a child, three counts of rape and four counts of indecent treatment of a child.

Judge Rowan Jackson sentenced him to four-and-a-half years prison.

"The behaviour is not only offensive to any concept of human decency but also takes significant toll on the family it occurs in," he said.

The court was told the girl remained silent for years because her stepfather said if she said anything he would "go away" and she and her mother would be left homeless.

He also promised to buy items in Minecraft if she took part in sexual acts.

A victim impact statement from the girl's mother spoke about how they were both struggling emotionally and the girl had become less outgoing.

The mother was also concerned about what the future would look like for the girl.

Prosecutor Matt Hynes said the man told the girl to "relax" when she complained of pain.

He said the girl told police the frequency of the abuse increased the longer it went on. At the end of the three years the abuse was almost daily.

The court was told the man worked on rigs and had moved out of the family home after he was arrested early last year. He had been providing about $500 in child support a week.
