Sex offender released with conditions

A CONVICTED sex offender has had his bid for freedom granted with a host of stringent conditions.

Maxwell Edward Gray, 52, hit the headlines late last year after sparking a massive manhunt in Rockhampton because he went missing while on day release.

He was located two hours later at an address in North Rockhampton.

He admitted to having smoked cannabis during his short lived freedom thus contravening his initial release conditions.

Gray, who appeared in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday via videolink, made an application to be released from prison on a full-time basis under strict supervision conditions.

Crown Prosecutor Kay Philipson told the court a psychiatrist concluded the chances of Gray reoffending were moderate, but that rose significantly if drugs or alcohol were added into the mix.

She said Gray was a long-time cannabis user and had struggled with the drug for the majority of his life.

Justice Peter Lyons said he wanted the matter clarified and asked the psychiatrist to expand on his findings.

Psychiatrist Michael Beech told the court he believed that if Gray was released into the community on an unsupervised order the risk of reoffending was moderate.

He said that if there were supervision orders in place then he believed the risk was low.

Justice Peter Lyons ordered Gray be released under 37 stringent conditions which included abstaining from smoking cannabis or consuming alcohol.

Gray will have adhered to a strict reporting regime and random drug testing as a condition of his release
