EMERGE'S Calen Le Couteur recently caught up with Aidan from four-piece Sunhaus for a chat on The Beach Boys, their debut EP and songwriting.

C: What first got you into music?

A: I think it was my dad constantly playing Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys when I was younger, and also my sister forcing me to listen to her angry drums music.

C: What was the first instrument you started playing?

A: I think it was probably the recorder much to my parent's distaste, and then violin and probably piano and then guitar.

C: How did the band initially form?

A: Well Dave and I went to high school together, then we met Adela and Madeleine at parties, and always found ourselves dancing to the same music over and over again so we finally decided to form a band and do it kind of professionally.

C: Can you tell me a little bit about you latest single "Bobby"?

A: Sure, well it's one of our older songs, we've been playing it for about a year and a half now. It's pretty much an alternative rock take on your general romantic storyline and we named the song after Adela's dog which unfortunately passed away a little over a year and a half ago.

C: When songwriting, do you prefer to write lyrics before or after the instrumentation has been worked out?

A: Personally I usually write the instrumentation first, and while coming up with a vocal structure I tend to just speak gibberish. Sometimes I'll stay with the gibberish, regardless of whether or not it makes sense. I'm not the only person in the band that writes the songs; Madeleine, our keyboardist has written two for us.
