Warwick rodeo no excuse for Clermont boys to buck school

IT'S not all fun and games at the Warwick Rodeo - just ask Clermont siblings Luke, Archie and Isabel Philp.

Despite being nearly 1000km away from home, the distance education students are honing their maths, English and science skills throughout the course of the week.

Whether it's over the phone to an Emerald-based teacher or under the watchful eyes of their governess Carol Draydon, the Philp children are sure to stay on top of their studies.

For Ms Draydon, setting up makeshift outdoor classrooms has become routine over the past few years.

"We travel to campdrafting events regularly - Warwick and Chinchilla are probably the biggest ones," she said.

Ms Draydon said these events also allowed Luke, 11, Archie, 6, and Isabel, 5, valuable social interaction with other distance education students.

"They are so isolated on their station (Wyrena) and they seem to love coming down," she said.

But teaching times tables at the Warwick Rodeo can be difficult, Ms Draydon admitted.

"Yesterday was the first day, and all they wanted to do was play," she said.

"You just have to get through what you can."

Despite the isolation from other students, Ms Draydon said distance education had its benefits.

"They really seem to understand the practical side of what they're learning," she said.

"A lot of what they learn could be valuable if they decide to work on the station one day."

And there's a fair chance we'll be seeing the Philp children at the Warwick Rodeo for plenty more years to come.

Their parents, Hugh and Sherri, are both competing at this year's event.

"The kids are already riding and have taken part in junior events," Ms Draydon said.
