Cop bashed in late-night attack

NORMALLY, Constable Glenn Walker would have clocked on to work the Sunday morning shift with his crew yesterday, but instead the desk where the first-year officer sits was empty.

His sombre colleagues waited anxiously for updates on the 32-year-old's condition after hearing the shocking news he had been airlifted to Brisbane after a senseless weekend bashing.

About 1am Saturday Constable Walker was making his way home from a night club when he was allegedly attacked and his wallet and badge was stolen.

Witnesses said Constable Walker had been crossing Boat Harbour Drive between McDonald's and a block of shops in Main Street.

It is reported that he tried to negotiate with those confronting him but was allegedly struck and fell to the ground and hit his head.

He was rushed to the Hervey Bay Hospital with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain according to an Ambulance spokesperson.

After being placed into a medically induced coma he was airlifted to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital.

His wife and two children left their Hervey Bay home to be with him while his parents flew in from Victoria.

Constable Walker and his family moved to Hervey Bay – his first posting – about four months ago.

Yesterday Senior Sergeant Dan Willet, officer in charge of the Hervey Bay station, said Const Walker had woken early in the morning.

He said while Const Walker had suffered “very serious head injuries” doctors expected to move him from the Intensive Care Unit into a general ward last night.

“This morning he was awake and responding very well which is great news for his recovery,” Sen Sgt Willet said.

The juvenile accused, who is known to police, was remanded in custody and charged with grievous bodily harm and robbery.

Officers from Hervey Bay CIB are reviewing security footage and are speaking to two other boys in relation to the incident.

It is alleged that during the attack the boy also stole some of Const Walker’s possessions including his phone, wallet and police badge.

Police will be objecting to bail when he faces court this morning.
