Woman killed by rolling car at Pomona markets

A WOMAN has died in front of stunned onlookers after being struck by an empty car rolling down a hill at the Pomona markets this morning.

At 11.45am a vehicle parked on a hill at Reserve St, Pomona rolled down the hill striking a second vehicle.

The second vehicle then collided with two pedestrians.

An advanced care paramedic, critical care paramedic, and doctor tried to save the 47-year-old woman, but she was declared deceased at the scene.

A second woman aged in her 70s did not receive any physical injuries.

Officer in Charge of Noosa Station Brad Bischoff said he understood that there was no-one in the vehicle and the handbrake had likely given away.

He said the woman was briefly alive when crews arrived but died soon after.

"She had some pretty significant injuries, first up she was (alive) but not for very long," he said.

"The vehicle has come on top of the hill and then rolled down, the handbrake giving way.

"The car has rolled on top of her, causing some significant internal injuries as well as a closed head injury.".

He said the woman was a stallholder at the markets and the accident happened just as they were packing up for the day.

"It was in the middle of the Pomona market day and there were quite a few fair few witnesses there," he said.

"Everyone was just packing up for the day thankfully, if it was earlier in the day there would have been a lot of people there but by then it was just the market stallholders."

Four ambulance units plus an ambulance helicopter were despatched on site.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed anything prior to the incident who has not already spoken to police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
