Rugby star makes top bachelors list

ROCKHAMPTON rugby union star "Rocket" Rod Davies may have been tackling Sharks in Durban yesterday but when he returns to Australia he could be fighting off another species.

Davies, 22, is set to catch the attention of females across the country after making Cleo magazine's 50 Most Eligible Bachelors for 2012.

The Queensland Reds star joins the cream of Australian eye candy from sporting heroes, comedians, hot tradies, TV personalities and even a suave politician in this year's list.

Davies, who is the fastest man at the Reds, lined up at fullback for the Super 15 champions against the Sharks in South Africa in the early hours of yesterday morning (Queensland time).

The Reds play the Bulls in Pretoria next weekend before they face the Western Force in Perth on March 31 on the team's return to Australia.

Frenchville and Rockhampton rugby union stalwart Shane Whitney can still remember "Rocket" scorching opposition teams for the Frenchville Pioneers under-12s.

Whitney joked Davies was always a "confident kid" so would take his Cleo most eligible bachelor nomination in his stride.

"He was always a level-headed young fella and that's something he has taken with him," Whitney said of the 2011 Wallabies squad member.

"He's certainly built up since his days here. He was only a tiny little fella back in under-12s."

Davies returned to Rockhampton last November to present trophies at Frenchville's junior rugby presentation day.

"He remembers where he comes from and is one kid I've got a lot of time for," Whitney said.

"He's grown into a thorough young gentleman."

Davies and the other top 50 finalists feature in Cleo's April issue, on sale from today, plus a one-hour TV special to air on GO! next month.

The winner of the Cleo Bachelor of the Year 2012 will be crowned on Wednesday, April 18.
