Rocky Gretel star to sing ‘true blue’ at State of Origin

GRETEL Scarlett is preparing for her biggest performance to date.

But it's not her upcoming lead role as Sandy in the new Australian production of Grease the Musical.

The Rockhampton native will sing the national anthem at Wednesday's second State of Origin clash at a packed Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

"I've sung the anthem before at things like a motocross event or a football game but not 50,000 people in a stadium on live TV," she said.

"The size of the crowd is the most nerve wracking thing about it."

The blue dress she's wearing for our chat is, of course, not reflective of her Origin loyalties.

Grease is the blonde beauty's first true leading role since she graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2008.

She will star opposite Rob Mills, as Danny, when the show opens in Brisbane in August.

Rehearsals begin in Sydney next month for the multi-million dollar John Frost production.

Scarlett said the producers were still undecided on whether she would speak with an American accent, like in the original musical, or an Australian accent like Olivia Newton-John in the movie.

"In the UK they do it in all American accents and I auditioned in an American accent," she said.

"It probably will turn out to be Australian, though, since it's an Australian production."
