Roar back to earth with draw

FROM the euphoria of thrashing Melbourne Victory 5-0, to the disappointment of walking away from Wellington with a 1-1 draw.

They were the emotions Brisbane Roar players had to deal with at Westpac Stadium yesterday.

It could have been worse.

After Belgian striker Stein Huysegems put Phoenix 1-0 up in the 16th minute, the Roar went close to going 2-0 down just three minutes later.

But Paul Ifill's well-taken free-kick was only stopped by the fingertips of Roar goalkeeper Michael Theo.

Huysegems's goal came courtesy of good lead-up work by Louis Fenton, with Roar defenders Jack Hingert and Matt Jurman caught out.

The Roar equalised five minutes before the break when striker Besart Berisha scored his third goal of the season.

He found himself in the open thanks to a pinpoint pass from Massimo Murdocha, the Algerian finishing beautifully with a left-foot chip over Phoenix keeper Mark Paston.

The second half did not live up to the excitement of the first stanza with neither side fining a winner, despite the Roar dominating with 62% of the possession.
