Ripoll wins Oxley despite swing

DESPITE now being in opposition, Oxley MP Bernie Ripoll sees no need to change his catchphrase - he'll still be working for his constituents.

With 76% of the two party-preferred vote counted, Mr Ripoll had 53.9% support, ahead of Andrew Nguyen on 46.1% - a swing against Labor of 1.85%.

Having held the seat of Oxley since 1998, the re-elected Labor MP said he still never considered himself a shoo-in for Saturday's election.

"I never treat my seat as safe. My LNP opponent Andrew Nguyen worked very hard and put up a valiant effort," he said at his post-election party at Gailes Golf Club.

"You like to believe that after working in an electorate for 15 years, you've built up enough support though.

"I'm very passionate about this community, it's where I live, it's where my friends live and I want to try and continue to build it up."

The 47-year-old said he was delighted with the win and said Labor now needed to show it was unified and had a plan for the country.

"It's about learning lessons from the past and rebuilding," he said. "We need to show people that we cannot only manage ourselves but the complex issues as well."

Now in opposition, Mr Ripoll said there were still lots of things that were being done in his electorate.

"Tony Abbott has promised to finish the upgrades to the Ipswich Mwy so I will be holding him to account on that," he said.

"He said he wanted to be known as 'the infrastructure prime minister', so we'll be wanting to see the infrastructure in our community.

"I will be also holding the new government to account to make sure they don't attack people's wages, livelihoods and families.

"In this community people work very hard and they expect governments to support them and not to make life harder for them."

Mr Ripoll said he wished to thank all of his supporters and volunteers and said it was a privilege to serve the people for another three years.

"My catchphrase has always been 'Bernie works for you' and I am going to continue to do just that," he said.
