Almost 280 local riders mount up to help a mate in need
LYING in his London hospital bed with a serious spinal injury, Darcy Ward laughs and shakes his head in disbelief.
His father, George, has just phoned to tell him about a fundraiser held in his honour back home in Ipswich.
The event, called Ride for Darcy, had about 280 motorcycle and hotrod riders take a round trip from The Royal Mail Hotel in Goodna to the Kalbar Hotel on the weekend, in support of the speedway racer.
Money raised from the ride went towards funding Darcy's recovery after he was involved in a speedway racing crash in Poland this year, which left him with severe spinal injuries.
Although some of the movement in his hands has returned, doctors are unsure whether Darcy will walk again.
Mr Ward said he and his son were overwhelmed by the gesture of support and the amount of people who turned out.
"When I told him about the news on the phone, he just laughed," Mr Ward said. "He was over the moon.
"It was a great turnout; there were a lot of people there who I didn't even know".
Mr Ward said about $10,000 was generated thanks to the fundraiser.
He said the money would go towards having his son flown back to Australia to continue his treatment and rehabilitation.
