Rick Santorum out of presidential race

RICK Santorum has suspended his bid for the White House, effectively making Mitt Romney the Republican candidate for the November presidential election.

Speaking at a surprise press conference at Gettysburg in his home state of Pennsylvania, Mr Santorum said he had considered the campaign with his family over the weekend and decided to bow out.

"We made a decision over the weekend, that while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign today, we are not done fighting," Mr Santorum said.

Tellingly he did not mention Mr Romney once during his 12-minute address.

The campaign between the two men has become increasingly nasty.
