Reunion to mark Jets' glory days
THE IPSWICH Jets are 30 years old and to celebrate they're getting the old gang back together.
The Jets will combine their annual "Old Boys" event in August with a reunion of some of the club's most celebrated teams, including the inaugural 1982 squad.
In addition, Jets marketing manager and unofficial historian Greg Lyons and long-time Ipswich football strapper Merv Gumbleton are coming together to document the history of Ipswich's premier rugby league club in a celebratory book.
While the completed book won't be ready for the August 18 event at North Ipswich Reserve, the pair hope to have a version ready for former players and staff to view.
"I'm getting all the history for him and Jacko's (Greg Lyons) putting it all together," Mr Gumbleton, a Jets strapper from 1987-1990, said.
"I keep all the paper clippings and I've got them all since 1982.
"What we haven't got we found on the State Library microfilm.
"It will have every player that has ever played for the Jets. The first try scorer, goal scorer, captain, strapper, everything."
The book will document the early careers of some of Ipswich pioneering rugby league players, many of whom it is hoped will attend the reunion which will coincide with the Jets clash with the Redcliffe Dolphins, their final home game for season 2012.
The original 1982 team included famous Ipswich names such as Cliff and Kevin Langer, older brothers of Broncos legend Allan and former Bronco Brett Walters, the oldest of the five Walters brothers.
Former Jets and Swifts player Gary Coyne went on to a long career with the Canberra Raiders following his time with the Jets.
Captain/coach of the original Jets team Greg Quinn, now a managing director for building firm Hutchison Builders is back spending time in Ipswich these days while his firm constructs the new Coles building in the city centre.
Mr Lyons said a team of volunteers were working to track down former players, particularly from the 1982 team and the grand final teams of 1987 and 2002.
"We're still looking for about five or six from '82 but anyone who can help tracking down former Jets players can give us a call to help out," he said.
