Prep teacher in class of her own

SOME well-deserved time-off awaits long-serving prep teacher Lyn Weimar, who marked her last day on the job on Friday, December 2.

Mrs Weimar began her career at Edge Hill Primary in Cairns in 1974, but took some time off part-way through her career to care for her young children.

On what was an emotional last day, Mrs Weimar said she'd enjoyed being a part of her students' lives.

"I always wanted to teach kids around that age because those are magical years," she said.

"It's the primary learning time."

Parents of past students dropped into the Springfield Lakes State School to say goodbye and wish Mrs Weimar all the best in retirement.

She admitted she had to stop herself from tearing up as she packed up her desk for the last time.

"Teaching prep is not just about getting kids ready for school.

"It's about aiding their social development and resilience - that's what will help them get through things later in life," she said.

"You want them to have that strength of character and the willingness to learn."
