Driver killed in race tragedy

LATEST: Police and Workplace Health and Safety are investigating the cause of a fatal crash at Queensland Raceway yesterday afternoon.

A 68-year-old man from northern NSW was taking part in a race involving about a dozen vehicles when his Ford Escort failed to negotiate a bend and slammed head-on into a tyre barrier, about 2.30pm.

Paramedics tried for some time to revive the man, however he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ipswich police Inspector Keith McDonald said it was not known what caused the vehicle to drive off the circuit, but said it was possible that the man may have suffered from a medical condition.

"We are hoping that a post-mortem, to be conducted tomorrow, will shed some further light on this," Insp McDonald said.

Mechanical failure also hasn't been ruled out.

Police do not know what speed the vehicle was travelling when it hit the wall, but said the front end of the vehicle did not sustain a significant amount of damage.

"The roll cage and tyre wall did their job," Insp McDonald said.
