Repeat offender ‘smokes weed daily’ to numb shoulder pain

A LOCKYER Valley woman who "smokes weed daily" does so to ease pain from a domestic violence altercation, the Gatton court has heard.

When police raided Jessica Dawn Nugent's Gatton home, they found a grinder, glass bowl and water pipe on a small table next to her bed.

They also found 0.2g of cannabis in a glass bowl.

Nugent told the police she smoked the drug daily and that she had used all the utensils herself.

The 39-year-old mother-of-four pleaded guilt to one charge of possessing a dangerous drug and one charge for possessing utensils or pipes that had been used.

She fronted the Gatton Magistrates Court this week with an additional 11 fraud charges and one count of stealing, which were dismissed due to the prosecution offering no evidence.

Police prosecutor senior constable Narelle Lowe told the court police had searched the woman's home on July 10 at 7.30am.

Her lawyer told the court that she used cannabis for pain relief and was a victim of severe domestic violence.

"She suffered a severe shoulder injury and had been using cannabis for that pain," her lawyer said.

"Her doctor advised her she would become a candidate for legal medicinal cannabis due to her pain."

Magistrate Robert Tuura was not impressed Nugent had a similar offence on her record just seven months prior.

"It will be cheaper for you to get prescribed medication … this is getting out of hand," Mr Tuura said.

"You were only before the court in February this year for similar offences and were fined $600."

Nugent was convicted with one penalty for the two offences.

She was charged $700, which was referred to SPER.
