Rent right in Rose City

AS a tenant, Jacky Morrow knows a bargain when she finds it and now so does the rest of the state, with Warwick being listed as one of the cheapest places to rent in Queensland.

Warwick was listed at number three on the list, according to the latest figures from the Residential Tenancies Authority.

The figures put the Rose City right behind Gympie and Charters Towers as the most affordable places to be a tenant, with four-bedroom houses here costing an average $290 a week.

The 21-year-old hairdresser could not believe her luck when she moved to the region seven months ago.

“Rent is so cheap here when compared to places like Brisbane and Toowoomba,” Ms Morrow said.

One of the drawcards for Ms Morrow to rent here was lower charges did not mean slumming it out in the sticks.

“I live close to the centre of town, in a nearly-new two-bedroom unit. It's so practical,” she said.

Wade First National Real Estate marketing agent Stuart Wade said the Warwick market was strong when compared with similar sized towns.

“I've been following the trends for quite some time,” Mr Wade said.

“There's definitely a market for rental properties (in Warwick) on the lower end of the price scale as there's a continual flow for the cheaper homes.

“We get about 20 to 30 people looking for any type of rental properties per day.”

Another local tenant Tania Smith swapped the hustle and high-end rents of the Gold Coast for the Rose City two years ago.

Initially she and her partner relocated for work reasons and moved in with a family member.

But cheap rents soon prompted the young couple to seek out their own accommodation.

“We had been paying $220 per week for a two-bedroom unit on the coast and now we are paying $160 for a three-bedroom house,” Ms Smith explained.

“We were dumbfounded by the difference.

“Rent on the coast was not only scarce, it was expensive, so we know we are getting good value for money here.”
