Regretful man punched ‘chick’ in face outside nightclub

PUNCHING a woman in the face outside a Hervey Bay nightclub has earned Blake Johnson Storch a prison sentence with immediate parole.

Storch claimed in the Hervey Bay District Court that he did not know the victim was a woman because of the way she was dressed.

He and the woman became involved in a heated argument inside the night club on March 31, 2012. Security intervened and Storch, 31, left the night club. The woman, who was 21 at the time, than ran across the street in an attempt to continue the argument.

The court heard the victim was yelling at Storch when he punched her once in the face.

Storch was then told repeatedly "you hit a chick, you just hit a chick," the court heard.

The woman was left with fractures to her jaw. The court heard the woman had flashbacks to the incident and had "spent hours in tears" as a result of seeing the injuries to her face.

Defence counsel Kate McMahon, appearing for Storch, said he was hard working and had moved from Hervey Bay to Roma after the incident.

He no longer went to night clubs and had cut back on his drinking.

Ms McMahon said because the woman was wearing a t-shirt and a baseball cap, her client had believed he was confronting a man, not a woman.

The court accepted that the conduct of the victim at the time of the incident was not entirely blameless.

Storch was sentenced to 10 months jail but with immediate parole.
