Regional rugby juniors urged to trial for Gold Cup series

THE best junior players from the Ipswich region are being encouraged to be part of the Australian Rugby Union's exciting Junior Gold Cup series.

However, time is running out to nominate for trials later this month.

For the first time, an Ipswich zone has been included in the national junior development program featuring under-15 and under-17 rugby teams from around the country.

Under-17 coach Rod Sadler was concerned some talented regional players might be unaware that nominations were due by tomorrow.

"The Ipswich coaches and management involved in the program want as many players to take advantage of this opportunity,'' Sadler said.

That includes local schools and promising juniors from the Springfield area.

"It's a new pathway to the ARU,'' Sadler said.

"It was a good success last year but there was an argument that Ipswich and the surrounding region should have a zone as well because there's plenty of talent out this way. They've agreed to that request.''

Under-15 and under-17 zone teams from each state will compete in the national tournament in February and March.

St Peter Claver College teacher Maioha Gregory is coaching the Ipswich under-15 team.

Jonny McMurtry is zone co-ordinator.

Trials are scheduled for Woodend Park from October 18-25 with the first training sessions early next month.

Players can be nominated on the ARU website.

For more information, contact McMurtry on 0427 727 992 or Sadler on 0435 095851.
