Pisasale on Monday: Region loses great man

ON BEHALF of all residents of Ipswich I have offered condolences, our thoughts and prayers to the family of Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones who was taken from us in terribly sad circumstances last week.

Our region has lost a great man.

I worked closely with Steve on matters of regional significance since he first became Mayor of the former Gatton Shire and when the floods of 2011 struck, he was there to support and lead the Lockyer Valley community.

Tomorrow I'm looking forward to meeting Bremer High's senior leaders and present their badges for 2016. One of the highlights will be to hear from the school captains and to share thoughts and ideas with our future community leaders. Special thanks to principal Steve Henderson and teachers for your dedication to our young people.

Ipswich's reputation for liveability and innovation continues to impress civic leaders overseas. This week we welcome from China a delegation from Zibo City in Shandong Province. While in Australia our visitors will meet with TAFE Queensland to discuss curriculum, teaching methods and best practice in a number of trade and engineering disciplines.

Any day is a good day to thank our servicemen and women in the Australian Defence Force for their service and sacrifice. Ipswich is always ready to warmly welcome defence personnel and their families. I'm proud to support the Defence Community Organisation and join them as they showcase a wide range of community groups and organisations which offer assistance and activities in our city. The next Welcome to Amberley expo is Thursday and I'll be there in person to welcome our newest postings.

The Ipswich Jets season launch this Friday will set the stage for another very exciting year of football. I'm confident fans and sponsors are in for a season to equal the winning year in 2015 which saw the Jets claim three championship titles. Go Jets.

On the weekend, Lodge Caledonian No. 14 celebrated 150 years at the Masonic Centre in Ipswich. It was also a celebration of 150 years of Scottish Freemasonry in our city. If you would like to read the fascinating history of the centre visit www.lodge caledonian.com/en/top/History/
