Redbank Plains girls lead state

REDBANK Plains High School's volleyball girls have shown the boys playing rugby league are not the school's only sport stars.

The volleyball program has been a focus at the school for several years, with encouraging results along the way.

But this year's Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup has shown that Redbank Plains is now a state leader, particularly amongst the girls.

Redbank Plains competed in the honours division (highest level) with great success at Boondall.

The school's year seven girls team were crowned state champions after beating the Gold Coast's Benowa High in the final.

Redbank Plains also competed extremely well in all other age groups, with the grade nine and 10 girls winning silver in their respective competitions.

It was a great reflection of the girls' effort and dedication this year, as well as the effort of all staff involved.

Year seven team coach Gavin Chant said the team had surpassed his own expectations in winning the state title.

"I thought we were a good chance but didn't think we'd win it," he said.

Redbank Plains had to overcome finishing third in their pool; beating Brisbane State High in a repechage to earn a rematch with Gladstone High in the semi-final.

There they reversed their pool result, winning in three sets.

"The girls really gelled well together," Chant said.

"The fact they took a set off Gladstone in their pool match built their confidence and they were motivated."

It is the first time the school has ever won a volleyball state title in the highest division and sets a benchmark for the future.

Chant believes the hard work of the players and staff will ensure the success continues.

"It's just the development of the volleyball program," he said of what has led to this year's success.

"The amount of time staff put in, before school and after school.

"And the attitude from the players was outstanding."

MVP for the grade seven tournament was Redbank Plains player Grace.
