Recycled blood new arthritis treatment

A NOOSA clinic is the first in Queensland to offer groundbreaking treatment that could improve quality of life for thousands of arthritis sufferers.

The Noosa Foot and Ankle Clinic has begun offering orthokine treatment.

The procedure was developed in conjunction with sports scientists to aid athlete recovery and has been used by AFL clubs such as Hawthorn.

It has also been found to be effective in the treatment of mild to moderate cases of arthritis.

"The affects are pretty significant when combined with other treatments," Noosa Foot and Ankle Clinic owner Craig Wanless said.

"It's not a single treatment.

"But the research has found it can have a dramatic improvement in pain and function."

The treatment involves blood being extracted from the patient using a special syringe.

The syringe contains glass beads that promote the production of anti-inflammatory proteins in the blood, which when injected back into the patient aid recovery.

Each treatment consists of six injections, over six weeks, and costs between $750 and $1300.

The Noosa Foot and Ankle Clinic treats knee, ankle and foot complaints, and has outlets at Noosa Heads, Tewantin and Gympie.
