Reality still sinking in for Big Brother winner Ben

BENJAMIN Norris is still on cloud nine after winning Big Brother last night.

The Melbourne accounts manager won a new car and $250,000 in prize money after earning 40 per cent of the more than 400,000 votes cast in the reality TV final.

But most notably, he left the Dreamworld studio as an engaged man after proposing to his partner Ben Williams, 27, on national television.

It's a move he planned to do whenever he left the Big Brother House.

"People have won Big Brother before and people have won more money than this before, but I'm walking out of here the real winner," he said.

"I have a new car, a lot of money and I get to start this new journey with Ben, someone who I love.

"Now I'm ready to settle down with Ben and have a normal Australian life."

At 32, Norris is the the eldest of this year's crop of 14 housemates.

He said it was a challenge to relate to and live with people from so many different walks of life.

"I found myself at the end of the program sitting between two girls who were 24, one who rides a toy horse and the other who thinks the capital of Germany is China," he said.

"Those are the contradictions of Big Brother.... it's a social experiment."

Just two percentage points separated runner up Layla Subritzky, who went home with a car and $10,000, and third-place finalist Estelle Landy, one of the show's most controversial characters.

The final show's ratings were respectable but less than grand with 1.47 million viewers tuning in to last night's winner announcement.
