Readers call on dog owner to pay vet bills... and more

RIVERVIEW resident Lola Hornburg is still nursing the physical scars of a dog attack in her own yard, but it’s the loss of her best mate Tiny and the overwhelming vet bills that will hurt her most.

Should the dog owners be responsible? Here’s what you said on Facebook:

Jaye Mallet – Of course they should be responsible... and if they were decent human beings they’d be paying Mrs Hornburg’s vet bill. This is so sad.

Kristy Clark – I was working at the vet Tiny was taken to on Saturday post surgery. The poor owner was so upset, distraught and very shaken. I couldn’t imagine what she would be going through - just absolutely devastating. Poor Tiny - may you RIP little buddy.

Cindy Marr Fasi – The owners of the dogs that attacked poor little Tiny should be liable for all vet costs. That’s the least they could do. It was their monsters that came into another property and attacked this small fluff ball. They should incur a fine as well. I know accidents happen, but it’s their responsibility to see their dogs are confined to their own yard. How awful for this elderly lady to witness such a tragic killing of her little Tiny. I’m sure this will scar her for the rest of her life, loosing her beloved pet in a horriffic way. They are liable for the lady’s mental well being as well. Vet fee paid, a plaque made in honor of Tiny, a sympathy card. And maybe purchase another puppy for this lady, if she wants another companion...is what they should be doing.

Katrina Valentina Gravano-Andolini – Yes, the owner of the vicious dog should be responsible and that dog should be put down.

Dave Min – Any dog that attacks another dog hasn’t been brought up right. It’s very sad that this has happened to her dog. Don’t go blaming the breed of that dog. Yes, it did wrong, it’s not the dog’s fault but the owner of it... and yes, they should cover the full cost. If I had a dog that did that I would have it put down. My heart goes out to the lady, god bless her.

Sammi Jones – It’s simple. The aggressive dog should be put to sleep. The owners pay her vet bills and also incur a large fine because next time it might not be a dog but a child.

Sebastien Giboulot – My cat was killed in our back yard 18 months ago by two dogs who escaped from a yard a block away. The owners were released of any responsibility because they gave up ownership of the dogs. I wish they could be made responsible regardless. My heart goes out to the owner. Terrible thing to witness.

Simone Louise – Absolutely they should. Our cat was asleep in our front garden, and the dog next door leapt their six foot fence and attacked him, puncturing his spine so he had to be put down. We got nothing from them, not even an apology. Kath Simpson – Me too. Council didnt care.
